The International Council of Museums (Icom) said it has appointed Medea Ekner its director general after she served a year in the post on an interim basis.

Ekner has more than 25 years of museum experience in Sweden and New Zealand and is a former chair of Icom Sweden. The president of Icom, Emma Nardi, described her in a statement as “the ideal person to both preserve our traditions and drive innovation.”

Digital transformation is a priority, Ekner says, “along with enhancing the organisation’s response to global challenges that impact cultural heritage and the communities affected by it.”

Ekner also serves as a board member of Blue Shield and is on the board of trustees of the European Museum Forum. Icom unites over 53,000 museum professionals in over 129 countries and establishes professional and ethical standards for museums.
