Perrotin has announced plans to open a new gallery in London’s five-star hotel Claridge’s, located in the gallery hotspot of Mayfair, by early 2025. The new gallery will open in a fully refurbished, 3,700-square-foot venue, which currently houses Claridge’s ArtSpace. The announcement comes as the art world’s eyes turn to London ahead of the opening of Frieze London and Frieze Masters next week.
“It’s important to have a gallery in the British capital,” founder Emmanuel Perrotin said in a press statement. “We have a long-standing relationship with the U.K. art scene and collectors. I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to set up the gallery in the right conditions. I’m delighted to offer our artists a new exhibition platform and new projects in such a prestigious environment.”
In 2021, Claridge’s ArtSpace was inaugurated with a show by Damien Hirst. Coincidentally, as Perrotin pointed out, his gallery mounted Hirst’s first commercial exhibitions—a group show in 1990 and a solo exhibition in Paris in 1991. The latter show lined up with the launch of Frieze magazine’s first issue, which featured one of Hirst’s butterfly paintings on its cover. “It was an exceptional moment in my career. I look forward to coming full circle,” Perrotin added.
This expansion comes after Perrotin announced its representation of the estate of Lynn Chadwick, a noted British sculptor, in April. The gallery will show Chadwick’s work as part of its upcoming Frieze London presentation.
Meanwhile, in February, Perrotin announced that he had ceased collaboration with art dealers Tom-David Bastok and Dylan Lessel, pulling out of two secondary-market spaces in Paris and Dubai. The trio first teamed up in 2021 to launch their secondary market gallery in Paris’s 8th arrondissement. The next year, the three art dealers opened Perrotin Dubai, which now operates as Bastok Lessel Dubai.
