Miami motel fair’s fun and affordable fare

Feria Clandestina (until 7 December), a satellite fair at the 1950s-era Gold Dust Motel, boasts 29 exhibitors across its hotel rooms and five special projects, featuring 93 artists in all. The fair was conceived in 2019 by Nuria Richards, the director of development for the Miami art non-profit Locust Projects.

Clandestina’s grassroots focus has led the fair to feature a residency with Jolt Radio, a local independent station. The fair is also offering its first art edition, The Pool Pass, a limited-run floaty and print by the artist collective We Are Nice’N Easy. Stand out installations include a massive outdoor soft sculpture, Old Cooter Energy, depicting a hairy-legged figure recumbent in a messy bedroom by Nancy Tobin; I’m Just A Girl, an unsettlingly feminine ceramic collection by twin studio duo Samantha and Sarah Ferrer; and a suite of freaky marionettes by the artists Daniel Almeida and Adrian Rivera. Much of the work on view is available for under $500, for those not on a Basel budget.
