Gagosian has announced the representation of 29-year-old photographer Tyler MitchellThe Atlanta-born artist, known for his portraits of prominent pop cultural figures, will have a solo exhibition with the gallery in New York in spring 2025.
On November 6th, Gagosian will present Mitchell’s work at Paris Photo alongside photographs by Richard Avedon. Additionally, new photos by the artist will be featured in the catalog accompanying “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2025.
Born in 1995, Mitchell studied cinematography at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. At just 23, he gained global recognition when he photographed Beyoncé for the September 2018 issue of Vogue, becoming the first Black photographer to shoot the magazine’s cover. One photo of Beyoncé, See Your Halo (2018), was acquired by the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The artist was also featured in The Artsy Vanguard 2018.
Mitchell has collaborated with brands including Marc Jacobs, Loewe, Nike, Converse, and Givenchy, among others. His theatrical photographs focus on the beauty of Black individuals, and are often set in domestic settings or rural landscapes.
Shortly after his meteoric rise, the Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam staged Mitchell’s first solo exhibition, titled “I Can Make You Feel Good,” in 2019. The show continued at the International Center of Photography in New York in 2020. In 2022, Mitchell presented his work with Gagosian for the first time at a solo show in London titled “Chrysalis.” Meanwhile, the gallery supported his commission at Frieze Masters that same year.
Several institutional shows around the world are spotlighting Mitchell’s work. In his hometown, the High Museum of Art is staging a solo exhibition titled “Idyllic Space,” which will be on view until December 1st. Meanwhile, his solo exhibition “Domestic Imaginaries” is on view at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Winston-Salem through December 31st, after opening at the SCAD Museum of Art in 2023. In Germany, C/O Berlin presented nearly 10 years’ worth of Mitchell’s work in “Wish This Was Real,” an exhibition scheduled to travel to four European museums through 2026, beginning with the Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki.
Mitchell’s photographs have been collected by prestigious institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Studio Museum in Harlem in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, among others.
