Art Basel, Switzerland
Art Basel’s Swiss edition, the first of the fairs and its most high-profile, brings together more than 250 of the world’s top galleries to Basel each year. Historically blue-chip galleries have saved their most expensive works for the fair, many being sold with price tags in the seven- or eight-figure range.
In addition to the main fair, Basel also sees several satellite fairs pop up around the Messe and elsewhere. Liste was founded in 1996 as “The Young Art Fair in Basel” and is known for bringing together more cutting-edge international galleries; the fair now takes place at the Messe Basel, with its entrance around the corner from the main fair.
Since 2019, the June Art Fair has aimed to several as an alternative to the other two fairs, taking place in a Herzog & de Meuron–renovated bunker that is only 200 meters (around 650 feet) from Art Basel’s entrance.
The Basel Social Club was founded in 2022 as an anti–art fair, with an emphasis on creating a social space for casual conversation that is filled with art. The event has not announced details for 2025.
