(Most) artists strive to make the world a better place, so it’s always heartening when a creative titan is nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. And this appears to be the case with Michelangelo Pistoletto, the Italian artist best known as a leading figure in the Arte Povera movement.

According to Galleria Continua, which represents the 91-year-old, Pistoletto was put forward for the prestigious prize by the Gorbachev Foundation and was “accepted by the Norwegian Nobel committee…his candidacy highlights the power of creativity in fostering global harmony”.

We of course asked the Nobel prize organisers to confirm the nomination—but they’re keeping tight-lipped. “The Nobel committee does not itself announce the names of nominees, neither to the media nor to the candidates themselves. In certain cases names of candidates appear in the media. These advanced surmises are either the product of sheer speculation or information released by the person or persons behind the nomination,” says a spokesperson.

This year’s Nobel prize announcements will take place 6–13 October—we hear Elon Musk is also in the running.
