Pace Gallery’s $450,000 sale of a Julian Schnabel painting from 2023 leads the initial slate of reported transactions from Zona Maco 2025, which kicked off on Wednesday, February 5th.

The 21st edition of Zona Maco features some 200 galleries from across 29 countries. Mexico City’s premier art fair, taking place at the Centro Cinitbanamex, is at the heart of a week packed with events and satellite fairs, including Material and Salón Acme. The vibrant local gallery scene is also abuzz,g with standout exhibitions on view through the weekend.

Notable institutional attendees at this year’s fair—the largest in Latin America—included Jorge Pérez of the Pérez Art Museum Miami; Brooklyn Museum director Anne Pasternak; and trustee groups from the Brooklyn Museum, SFMOMA, and ICA LA, as reported by ArtNews.

Zona Maco 2025 arrives amid U.S. president Donald Trump’s threats to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico. The tariffs are currently paused until next month. Still, galleries reported optimism about commercial activity throughout the VIP day.

“The energy at this fair is jubilant and full of genuine passion and curiosity,” Paul Henkel, founder of Palo Gallery, said in a statement sent to Artsy. “Given the choppy waters of the last few months, it has been a breath of fresh air seeing all these collectors eager to buy and learn.”

Below is a selection of notable early sales reported by galleries at Zona Maco 2025.
