The UK artist Peter Doig’s love of music will be explored in a new show due to open at the Serpentine Galleries in London next year (October 2025-February 2026). In House of Music, the influential Scottish artist will reveal the contents of his record collection, pairing his paintings with music and film in a “multi-sensory environment”.
“For House of Music, Doig will bring his [music] archive to life through a sculptural installation of rare, restored analogue speakers. During the course of the exhibition Doig will invite a roster of musicians and other music enthusiasts to animate this ‘high fidelity’ equipment with their own selection of vinyl through a series of residencies,” says a gallery statement.
In 1998, Peter Doig’s music collection—comprising CDs, 12” vinyl, 7” vinyl and cassettes—was included in the catalogue for his 1998 exhibition Peter Doig: Blizzard seventy-seven at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Writing in Frieze, Neal Brown described the collection as “medium-cool”. “No MOR, Marks-and-Spencer rock like U2 or Sting, but an eclectic mix of classic and left-field rock with a high percentage of indie material.”
Doig, who left his longtime dealer Michael Werner last year, is curating a show at Gagosian’s New York gallery (until 18 December). In the exhibition, new paintings by Doig are hung alongside historical and contemporary pieces loaned from major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) and the Tate in London.
Solo exhibitions dedicated to Arpita Singh, Giuseppe Penone, and Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley will also be presented at Serpentine Galleries next year.
