Sculpture Projects Münster has appointed Vincent Schier as the curator of the 50th anniversary edition, set to open in June 2027. He joins a team led by three members of the Zagreb-based curating collective What, How & for Whom (WHW), who were appointed artistic directors in August last year.

Concerned with environmental and social sustainability, Schier was previously the artistic director of the Kunstverein Göttingen and a curator at the Kunsthaus Dresden. At the Neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst, he is part of a curatorial group involved in an artistic and research project examining issues concerning nuclear energy in Germany and Hungary. He has taught at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig and the Burg Giebichenstein art academy in Halle.

Sculpture Projects Münster, an outdoor sculpture exhibition which takes place once a decade in the northern German city, was initiated in 1977 by Klaus Bussmann and Kasper König, who died last year. More than 220 artists have taken part in the event since 1977, including Isa Genzken, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman and Nicole Eisenman. Around 40 works of art have become permanent fixtures of Münster’s cityscape.

The three members of WHW, Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović, are the first women appointed to run Sculpture Projects Münster. They were previously artistic directors of the Kunsthalle in Vienna. In a statement last year, they said they are “committed to a pedagogical approach, primarily exploring the connection between repressed history and the pressing issues of the present.”
