NeueHouse, a high-end workspace where art events are often held, filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy to liquidate its assets last week and closed all its locations on Friday, September 5.

“Although NeueHouse has created an extremely valuable business that is prized by members and event hosts, unfortunately, it has been burdened by legacy liabilities,” the company reportedly informed its members. “While this is certainly not the outcome we envisioned for our business, we believe it is the most responsible path for all our stakeholders, though we deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our valued employees, members and customers.”

The liabilities referenced, which lead to the company’s demise, remain unclear. However, it appears the business was financially struggling.

NeueHouse became known for hosting prominent events across the art world and Hollywood, with locations across New York, Hollywood, and Venice Beach. Club members spanned the worlds of art, fashion, media, design, film, and television.

NeueHouse cohosted panel discussions, for example, with ARTnews sister publication Art in America that coincided with magazine releases in both 2017 and 2018. The digital art marketplace Artnet also cohosted a number of events and programs with the social space, including the establishment of a program that brought contemporary art to NeueHouse’s walls.

NeueHouse’s Madison Square location was redesigned by Rockwell Group in 2013. Five floors inside a century-old manufacturing building were revamped to make way for seating and chandeliers, while the upper floors of the building were used as offices and lounges.

Its Hollywood flagship was also renovated by Rockwell Group that same year. The firm transformed the former CBS Radio Building, designed by Swiss-born modernist William Lescaze in 1938, into a six-story communal space. In the process, historic corridors, curved walls, and porthole windows were restored.

In 2019, the company acquired the Bradbury Building in downtown Los Angeles, which was redesigned by Toronto- and Los Angeles–based Design Agency. In 2022, NeueHouse opened its Venice Beach location, wherein two masonry buildings were adjoined and renovated by Loescher Meachem Architects and Design Agency.
