Violeta Sofia creates fine art and portrait photography that celebrates the beauty of human diversity. Born in Cameroon and raised in Spain from a young age, the artist’s multicultural upbringing deeply influences her work, which often explores themes of identity and human connection. She has been exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the National Portrait Gallery and Christie’s, as well as featured on the cover of renowned publications like Elle Italia and The Telegraph.
Sofia’s series shows a pair of hands gripping bunches of vibrant flowers. The images are like classic portraits, except where you’d expect to see a face looking back at you, blooms emerge from puffed sleeves and frilly lace. The artist takes inspiration from the depth and richness of old masterworks; the luscious bouquets resemble paintings by Jean-Michel Picard or Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder. In one, a huge bunch of pink flowers in every shade stands out from a black background, matched by fuchsia-coloured clothes. Elsewhere, two strelitzia, or ‘bird of paradise’ plants, sit before a glowing orange circle, reminiscent of tropical locations and lush gardens.
Inspiration for the series came from the artist’s experiences with vitiligo, a long-term condition where pale white patches develop on the skin. It is something that is constantly evolving, meaning that patterns on the skin change over time. For the artist, this means a process of learning self-acceptance and love regardless of appearance: “The emotional impact of vitiligo hits me the hardest when I’ve grown accustomed to a skin pattern and have embraced it, only for it to change again. It’s a process that takes time, and yet people often expect instant self-acceptance.”
The artist’s experiences with vitiligo, a long-term and constantly evolving skin condition, serve as inspiration for Hand Masters. “The emotional impact of vitiligo hits me the hardest when I’ve grown accustomed to a skin pattern and have embraced it, only for it to change again. It’s a process that takes time, and yet people often expect instant self-acceptance. In Hand Masters, I document my hands at their current stage of discolouration, completely white. Through this exploration, I delve into my emotions and examine the shape, colour, texture, and symmetry of vitiligo. Despite my initial fear, I have channelled my emotions into art that celebrates the rebirth of my ever-changing self. I perceive and objectify my hands as flowers, a centrepiece symbolising a cleansing of my emotional state, accomplishment, growth, individuality, uniqueness, and, of course, beauty.”
Sofia is commited to social activism, and to advocating for female inclusivity and representation in the arts. The series uses photography as a powerful tool to challenge stereotypes and highlight the diverse experiences of women, particularly those of colour. Through her lens, points of insecurity become visual moments to centre, bringing the beauty that comes from difference to the fore.
