Five years after the banana frenzy, Maurizio Cattelan takes aim at gun violence at Art Basel Miami Beach

Fresh off his work Comedian (2019) selling for $6.2m at Sotheby’s in New York, Maurizio Cattelan is debuting a new work at Art Basel Miami Beach, five years after his banana taped to a wall became a sensation. Meat (2024), on Gagosian’s stand, features images of orchids on large wooden panels that have been struck with gunfire. Like Cattelan’s Sunday (2024) installation at Gagosian in New York earlier this year, the work is a statement on gun violence.

“I experimented with different subjects—mountains, groups of clouds, landscapes, portraits of people, unmade beds after a long night’s sleep and so on,” Cattelan says. “Ultimately, I chose flowers, first because I have always wanted to use them as a subject, and second because their beauty contrasts with the violence of the shooting and is truly disarming.”

The gallery would not disclose the price of Meat. Gagosian will collaborate with Cattelan again next year with a London show in the spring.
