I’ve always wanted to be unique and in a class by myself when creating art. I paint on plexiglass, using reverse imaging. I paint on one side with glass paint, alcohol inks and metallic markers and you view the painting on the unpainted side. After coating the painted side, I varnish it and hang it unframed with copper wire. I also paint on white, bronze and black plexiglass, depending on the subject matter.

In my early years, my paintings portrayed representational landscapes and portraits, favoring Monet and the Impressionists. I used oils on canvas, but then I developed a taste for acrylics and my compositions became more abstract, inspired by Picasso, Van Gogh and Matisse.

I began exploring canvas collages, sculpting pieces of copper and wire with found objects and painting on mailing tape, wound around stretcher bars. This was exciting, textural and totally engaging. Gallery owners encouraged me to try plexiglass, transparent, lighter than glass and shatter resistant. I was hooked! I also began sculpting plexiglass which heightened my fascination with three dimensional pieces.

My art life today is focused on plexiglass, creating vibrant, colorful paintings of abstract realism that takes nature to the next level. I sometimes carve the outside of the plexiglass, crafting a more sculptural look and adding visual interest. My current series focuses on wildlife and the way their eyes take you deeper into the painting. What are they thinking? How do they manage to survive and protect their loved ones?

I am also inspired by the intricate petals of a flower or figurative pieces that captures a person’s inner feelings, showcasing their personality.

Native American culture and their traditions also find a way into my paintings. Living in Siletz, Oregon for 18 years and teaching middle school art at the Siletz Valley Charter School extended my creative knowledge in so many ways.

It is hard to explain my visual interpretation of what I see, so instead of words, I offer you color, images, symbolism and meaning so you can emotionally engage with the artwork in front of you and make it your own.
