“Beyond the South Seas” acrylic, 36″ x 36″

I started drawing and classical piano at a very early age in my native Bulgaria. My family immigrated to New York when I was 18 years old. I was fortunate to continue my musical education by studying piano pedagogy at the Juilliard School of Music, and then taught piano in Whitestone, New York.

“Atelier Valentina” acrylic, 24″ x 30″

A few years later, I pursued my love of the visual arts by studying oil painting at the Art Students’ League in New York City. My husband and I moved to East Hanover, New Jersey in 1999 to be closer to our grandchildren. That’s when I started to explore watercolor painting and later acrylic painting with noted artists around the world like Carl Burger, Alvaro Castagnet, John Salminen, Robert Burridge, and others.

“Life Journey” acrylic, 30″ x 30″

My style has evolved through the years from realism to impressionism to abstract and semi-abstract expressionism.  I was fortunate to have lived in three countries and six cities, and visited over 50 countries. Seeing people in their different cultures and environments, trying their food, and listening to their music, is very inspiring. I strive to capture the true spirit of my subjects.

Whimsical painting of a city setting

“The Light Within” acrylic, 30″ x 30″

Often I paint the way music makes me feel, especially when I am creating a painting from my inner eye. I start with a few black lines wherever my hand moves, then I introduce some color and develop the images from there.

semi-abstract painting of a girl looking in the mirror

“Reflection” acrylic, 24″ x 24″

Even with my formal art education, I am an intuitive painter. People who have seen and bought my paintings tell me that they feel the emotion in my work and that makes me happy.

I am proud to be an Elected Member and Fellow of the American Artists Professional League and a Signature member of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club in New York City.

“An Evening with Friends” acrylic, 20″ x 20″

Additionally I’m a member of the Northeast Watercolor Society, the Garden State Watercolor Society and Essex Water Color Club, the oldest watercolor club in New Jersey, where I served as President.

“The Joy of Reading” acrylic, 20″ x 20″

My work has been in many juried art exhibits at the Salmagundi Club and National Art Club in New York City as well as prominent venues in the tri-state area. I am pleased that many of my paintings are in private and corporate collections.
