David Zwirner has announced its representation of the rising American artist Walter Price, coinciding with the gallery’s 30th anniversary. Price, known for his vibrant artworks that blend abstract and representational elements, will debut a new painting in the exhibition “David Zwirner: 30 Years,” opening May 23rd. This anniversary show will also inaugurate Zwirner’s new Los Angeles space and feature every artist from the gallery’s expansive roster.

Additionally, a solo exhibition dedicated to Price’s works is scheduled for November—also at Zwirner’s Los Angeles location—following the artist’s largest museum exhibition to date, at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Price will continue to be represented by Greene Naftali in New York.

Price’s artistic practice is characterized by a fluid mix of vivid colors and textured brushstrokes, along with a variety of motifs such as children’s faces, vehicles, furniture, animals, and celestial bodies. These elements often appear and disappear across his canvases, creating layered surfaces that evoke personal and collective memory.

Zwirner expressed admiration for Price’s “utterly assured and complex compositions,” having initially encountered his work in 2022 at the gallery’s exhibition “Toni Morrison’s Black Book,” curated by Hilton Als. “His work, which exudes mystery, playfulness, and a careful attention to process and color, sets him apart among the emerging painters of his generation,” Zwirner said.
