C L E A R I N G has announced its representation of Henry Curchod, an American-born painter based in London. Curchod, who recently presented “OH FORTUNA!” at the gallery’s New York location, will mount another solo show with the gallery in Los Angeles in 2025.
Born in 1992 in Palo Alto, California, Curchod creates vivid paintings in which his subjects find themselves enveloped by exaggerated surroundings and diffusive backdrops. He starts with sketches with oil sticks to create a foundational background before applying turpentine with various tools for gestural marks. He then finishes with oils and charcoal to refine the representation of his objects and figures.
“Curchod utilizes an energetic and distinct method of mark-making to create wry, potent images which address truths about aspects of our society that we often prefer not to engage with,” said C L E A R I N G director John Utterson. “His is a singularly precise, timely, and, at times, haunting vision, and we are delighted to have him on board.”
In 2014, Curchod completed his BFA at the University of New South Wales. Before his recent show with C L E A R I N G, Curchod presented solo exhibitions at Gallery Vacancy as part of Paris Internationale in Paris, Shoot the Lobster in New York, Mamoth in London, and Chauffeur in Sydney.
