New York-based Israeli artist Oren Pinhassi is now represented by Lehmann Maupin. Known for his anthropomorphic sculptures and massive installations, the artist will show at the gallery’s New York location this September.
Born in Tel Aviv in 1985, Pinhassi graduated from Israel’s Hamidrasha School of Art at Beit-Berl College before receiving his MFA at Yale University in 2014. In the following year, the artist was granted residencies at Storm King Art Centre in New York, Castello di San Basilio in Italy, and Outset Contemporary Art Fun in London. His sculptural work is defined by layering plaster and over steel skeletons of varied shapes and sizes. In the last year, he has shown as part of group institutional shows as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial and at the ICA Philadelphia.
“I admire [Lehmann Maupin’s] dedication to presenting challenging installation-based works by artists like Nari Ward, Lee Bul, Do Ho Suh, and Erwin Wurm, who each turn to unconventional materials to tackle pressing socio-political questions,” said Pinhassi in a press statement. “I look forward to contributing to this meaningful dialogue by creating work that continues to expand our perspective and addresses our place within the larger ecosystem.”
Other than Lehmann Maupin, the artist is co-represented by Edel Assanti in London and Commonwealth and Council in Los Angeles. Pinhassi’s work is featured in several prominent collections, including the GAMeC Museum of Modern Art in Bergamo, Italy; KADIST in Paris, France; the Palazzo Monti in Brescia, Italy; and the Petah Tikva Museum of Art in Petah Tikva, Israel.
