Born in Reykjavík, Iceland, in 1958, Thor Rafnsson is a painter whose artistic practice is deeply connected to memory, landscape, and the enduring power of Icelandic folklore. Now living and working in Malmö, Sweden, he has devoted his career to creating paintings that move beyond literal representation, inviting viewers into emotionally charged spaces shaped by nature, mythology, and human experience. His visual language balances abstraction and figuration, allowing recognizable forms to emerge through richly layered compositions and expressive color.
Rafnsson studied at The Icelandic College of Arts and Crafts before continuing his education at Bonderup Art School in Sweden. Throughout his career, he has consistently explored the relationship between external landscapes and internal emotional states. His paintings are informed by both personal memory and cultural heritage, transforming familiar motifs into poetic reflections that encourage contemplation rather than direct narrative.

Group exhibitions have included Art Öresund in Helsingborg, Galería Azur in Berlin and Madrid, and Mads Art Gallery in Milan. He has also participated in Art Nordic and Works Art Fair in Denmark.
Recognition for his practice includes receiving the Contemporary Art Curator Collectors Art Prize in 2023.
