“Spring Hills” glass mosaic, 24″ x 24″

I grew out my bangs and became an artist.

After a career in media, raising three children, and moving around the country for my husband’s career, I became an empty nester ready to reinvent myself. My journey as a full-time artist began unexpectedly when my neighbors invited me to their garage to create glass mosaics. I crafted a small mosaic flower, and I haven’t stopped creating glass art since.

Glass mosaics are an organic art form, with ancient roots and a process that often draws blood. But I thrive in my studio as I transform large sheets and tiny shards of glass into meaningful fine art pieces. My studio is a welcoming, light-filled space in my garage with bins and jars of colored glass and an enormous whiteboard to list ideas, post inspiration photos, keep track of deadlines and update my to-do lists.

“Gifts of the Central Valley” glass mosaic, 17″ x 22″

Please touch the art! I encourage viewers to touch my art because its textures are marvelous—vintage bathroom glass with daisy patterns, flowing water glass, straight-edged rods, and rounded-edge blown glass. I’m studying neuro-aesthetics to understand how the brain responds to art. To enhance sensory interaction, I’m working on a Lyric Series of mosaics. I envision a show where we can view and touch the art and listen to the music which inspired it.

Other collections I’m developing include California From Above, featuring mosaics of iconic Central Valley farmlands, the Mosaic Dress Series, to be worn by vintage mannequins, and the Moon Series, inspired by our love of the moon we all share. I think about art as a global language. It is something that can be transformative and bring understanding. Our collective work as artists feels more important than ever.

“The Overlook” glass mosaic, 16″ x 18″

Since launching my Story Glass Mosaics business in 2024, I’ve reflected on the significant individuals who shaped my journey. My family and neighbors offer invaluable support, while a talented photographer/graphic designer friend helps showcase my work professionally. My hair stylist allows me to display art in her salon, which has transformed into a thriving sales venue.

“Velvet Sunset” glass mosaic, 24″ x 18″

The owner of a framing store in San Francisco offered me a three-month solo exhibit at his new location, sparking inspiration on many levels. And my glass supplier has become an incredible mentor who guides me through creative challenges. Small actions, like inviting someone to your garage studio, can profoundly impact an artist’s success. So as I build my business, I hope to support other artists on their journey as well.

Reinvention brings a fresh perspective and I’m thrilled that art has found me!
