Fidra Fine Art in Gullane is showing Made in East Lothian – work by artists either based in East Lothian or who have featured elements of its landscape.
With its scenic towns, countryside and coastline, the area has a long history of attracting and inspiring artistic talent such as J M W Turner, who sketched East Lothian’s castles and Bass Rock. In the early part of the last century, it was said that East Linton drew so many reputable artists that one had to stroll the banks of the Tyne with caution, ‘for fear of tripping over easels or painting kits.’ Among other artists drawn to the area were Arthur Melville, Scottish Colourists F C B Cadell & S J Peploe, Sir John Lavery, Glasgow Boys James Guthrie and E A Walton, Sir William Gillies and John Bellany… the list goes on.
Today the county supports a vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries such as Fidra, which is showcasing some of the gallery artists either based in, or working in, East Lothian today, including Julie Barnes, Claire Beattie, John Boak, Georgina Bown, George Birrell, Alan Connell, Ann Cowan, Fee Dickson, Matthew Draper, Ronnie Fulton, Andy Heald, Kate Henderson, Ged Lerpiniere, Sam MacDonald, Rachel Marshall, Linda MacKinnon, Line Mortensen, Pascale Rentsch, Sue Shields, Jayne Stokes, Astrid Trügg, Elizabeth Vischer, Christopher Wood, Darren Woodhead, Julia Zeller-Jacques, John Bellany, John Campbell Mitchell, Patrick William Adam, James Elder Christie, Sir William Gillies & Alexander Garden Sinclair (1859 – 1930), whose work is pictured.
