Independent New York Names Exhibitors for Upcoming Edition in May

New York’s Independent art fair has named the 82 galleries that will take part in its upcoming 16th edition, scheduled to take place May 8–11 at Spring Studios in Tribeca.

Among the galleries that will show at Independent are the Approach, Bradley Ertaskiran, Corbett vs. Dempsey, Daniel Faria Gallery, Linseed, Magenta Plains, Mitchell-Innes & Nash, Night Gallery, Maureen Paley, Kendra Jayne Patrick, Ryan Lee, and Hannah Traore Gallery.

This iteration of the fair will also see the launch of a new initiative called Independent Debuts. This section, spread throughout the fair, builds on something that has been a hallmark for Independent for several years, that many artists receive their first New York solo at the fair, as opposed to a gallery or nonprofit already operating in the city.

Last year’s edition saw artist Deborah Joyce Holman, who is based in London and Basel, receive such a first outing, with her nine-hour film, Moment 2 (2022), shown in a black box at the fair via London’s Ginny on Frederick gallery. The Guggenheim Museum in New York recently acquired the work for its permanent collection through a collaboration with Independent to raise matching funds for its acquisition.

This year’s Independent Debuts will feature 22 solo presentations for artists who have not previously had single-artist showings in New York, including Amel Bashier at Addis Fine Art, Gunnel Wåhlstrand at Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Nooshin Askari at Cibrián, Ada M. Patterson at Copperfield, and Sameen Agha at Indigo+Madder.

“It’s not universally known that Independent has curated more solo New York debuts than all the New York fairs combined. Oscar Murillo, Nicolas Party, and more recently Deborah Joyce Holman have been introduced at Independent at the beginning of their careers,” Independent founder Elizabeth Dee told ARTnews in an email. “The new curatorial initiative clarifies our past achievements and demonstrates more publicly our show’s commitment to champion exceptional future talent.”
