Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara has been enlisted to design a range of merchandise and the promotional poster for FireAid, a benefit concert set to take place at the Intuit Dome and Kia Forum in Los Angeles on January 30. All proceeds from the event will communities affected by the recent LA wildfires.
The concert, produced by music moguls and ARTnews Top 200 Collectors Shelli and Irving Azoff in collaboration with Live Nation and the LA Clippers, boasts a lineup of heavyweights including Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Nicks, Katy Perry, and Joni Mitchell. The Azoffs, longtime admirers of Nara’s work, approached dealer Tim Blum early in the planning process, securing the artist’s involvement in a project that aligns with Nara’s longstanding engagement with humanitarian causes.
Nara’s personal history with disaster relief—shaped by experiences of the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami—has informed his practice, making him a natural choice for this collaboration. The merchandise, much of which features his 2023 work Midnight Tears, ranges from posters to T-shirts, hoodies, caps, and totes. According to the benefit concert’s website, proceeds will be distributed by under the advisement of the Annenberg Foundation and will be used “for short-term relief efforts and long-term initiatives to prevent future fire disasters throughout Southern California.”
The collection will be available for purchase online, offering fans and collectors alike a chance to participate in the recovery effort while acquiring limited-edition works by one of Japan’s most celebrated contemporary artists. While charity merchandise may not rebuild homes or restore lost landscapes, it at least offers a way for art to play a small but meaningful role in disaster relief—if only as a reminder that culture and commerce can occasionally find common cause.
The concert coincides with Nara’s exhibition at BLUM which features a new series of bronze sculptures heavily inspired by Nara’s experience with the Great East Tsunami along side paintings and drawings titled “My Imperfect Self.” The show runs through March 22.
