Not everyone thinks big is best. For 50 years, Flowers Gallery in London has invited artists to show little works of art. “Established in 1974 at Flowers Gallery, Small is Beautiful (until 4 January) invites selected contemporary artists from various disciplines to showcase works with a fixed economy of scale, each piece measuring no more than seven x nine inches,” says a statement. Artists who have taken on the “tiny” challenge this year—and there are more than 100 of them— include Maggi Hambling, Cody Cobb, Stuart Pearson Wright, Julie Cockburn and Charlotte Colbert. Some pieces have already been snapped up including Hambling’s Wave & Rising Moon (2024) but some works are available, making an ideal Christmas gift for an arty relative. Pieces still for sale include Flats with Graffiti, 2024 (£1,850), a head-turning painting of inner city housing by David Hepher. A host of high-profile figures turned up for the launch earlier this week such as the actor David Thewlis and the fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, showing that minuscule art really does have pulling power.
